Compassionate and Empowering

Find strength and clarity on your inner journey

Life is hard, and trauma is an inevitable part of existence. Anxious and depressive feelings, even panic, are natural neurological and physiological responses to life circumstances and to both the real and perceived threats and losses that we encounter. Unfortunately, few of us have had the benefit of truly effective models for how to adapt to, accept and learn from the challenges of life, and there are times when we all find ourselves in need of a new perspective or model to help us navigate a particularly challenging situation or circumstance.

At Ophiuchus Counseling and Psychotherapy, our goal is to support clients on their own journeys. We recognize that clinicians and therapists are simply fellow travelers in the bewildering and complex journey of life. Rather than offering authoritative advice or prescriptive solutions, we seek to empower clients to identify and fully embrace agency for their own lives, finding answers from within the wealth of their own life experience. Whether learning to recognize and hold empathy for one’s own neurophysiological or sensory responses and/or tapping insight from experiences we’ve long forgotten or never fully appreciated the value of, we work to support you on your journey and within the context of your own values, culture and belief system.

Client populations and issues we commonly work with include:

  • Relationship and communication challenges with couples and families
  • Individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, panic, grief and/or post-traumatic stress
  • Combat veterans and first responders
  • Separation, divorce and complications with co-parenting and child custody
  • Teens or adults with complex developmental trauma
  • Life transitions and/or crisis management
  • Cultural adjustment
  • Addiction (e.g. substances, gambling/gaming, romance/sex, food, etc.)
  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation

What is the Origin of Ophiuchus

Its name is derived from the ancient Greek word phioukhos, which means serpent-bearer or snake-handler.

Ophiuchus is associated with a figure from Greek mythology named Asclepius, who was a legendary healer and physician. According to the myth, Asclepius was exceptionally skilled in the art of medicine and possessed the ability to resurrect the dead.

The story goes that Asclepius learned the secrets of healing from a serpent. In one version of the myth, he was taught by the serpent when he observed a snake bringing healing herbs to another injured snake.

Asclepius used this knowledge to become a renowned physician, and he became so skilled that he could even bring the dead back to life.

This act of reviving the dead caught the attention of the gods, particularly Hades, the god of the underworld, who was concerned that Asclepius would upset the balance between life and death. As a result, Zeus, the king of the gods, struck Asclepius down with a thunderbolt and placed him among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus.

We chose to incorporate Ophiuchus into our logo as a representation of the healing that can take place when we help others.
